Maintenance work has this week begun on the Merewether Wharf seawall at Honeysuckle, Newcastle harbour.
The Hunter Development Corporation (HDC) has appointed Harbourworks Pty Ltd to undertake the work following a competitive tender process.
HDC General Manager Bob Hawes said the work will involve the entire length of the 450m seawall and take up to four months to complete.
The work area stretches east from the Maritime Centre and the Boardwalk, past the Crowne Plaza Hotel and on to the eastern point of the Breakwater Apartments.
Mr Hawes said the work involved:
- Seawall cleaning and systematic inspection;
- Possible targeted seawall repairs as necessary; and
- Removal of remaining timber fender piles mainly by water-based equipment.
Mr Hawes said no significant work would be undertaken on the promenade deck on weekends or public holidays owing to the popularity of the public promenade for walking, jogging and cycling.
Activities will be restricted to between the hours of 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturday.
Letters have been sent to residents and nearby businesses advising of the works.
Environmental and traffic management measures will be implemented by the contractor as necessary.
